Run as a support event for the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, the 32-lap race marked Perkins first competitive outing in the new VL Commodore. Starting from pole position, Perkins battled fiercely against a competitive field of Ford Sierras, Nissan Skylines, and Holden VK Commodores before finishing a strong 3rd place behind Dick Johnson and George Fury. It was a milestone moment for Perkins, coming just a year after he had branched out to form his own team, Perkins Engineering.
